The pieces in this collection are first coated with flashing slips or glazes and then finished in a unique, time-intensive process called soda-firing.
In this type of firing, sodium carbonate ash is sprayed into the kiln (shown above). The soda ash vaporizes and flows through the kiln, glazing pieces and interacting with the silica, alumina and oxides in the glaze, slips and clays.
The result is a wonderful, varied surface that mixes gray from the soda and orange/chestnut tones from the flashing slips. The simple forms in this collection are well-suited to recording the unpredictable path of the flame and soda.
